紐約時報暢銷科普書作者 Zach Weinersmith 在 Twitter 表示：加密貨幣信仰者為何不用黃金就好？以太坊創辦人 Vitalik Buterin 則反駁：加密貨幣是更好的選擇。
紐約時報暢銷科普書作者 Zach Weinersmith 在 Twitter 表示：我在加密貨幣信仰者的思維框架中聽過唯一一個合理的論點，就是他們不想要一個集權貨幣，不過在這樣的框架下為何不用黃金就好？
以太坊創辦人 Vitalik Buterin 則反駁：
黃金極其不便。它難以使用，特別是在和不信任的各方交易時，它並沒有支援多重簽名等安全儲存選項，在這點之上，黃金的採用率低於加密貨幣，所以說加密貨幣是更好的選擇。
Uniswap 創辦人 Hayden Adams 也回覆並給出腦洞大開的論點，他認為黃金存在非常高的通膨風險，因為未來人類可能拓展至其它小行星開採其它貴金屬，進而導致黃金暴跌。
實際上 Vitalik 多年前即認為加密貨幣會發展出類似於黃金在歷史上的功能，他在 2014 年的論文中所描述的現象與當前加密市場有些相似：
鑒於主流世界對區塊鏈技術的高度興趣以及對比特幣的不以為然，也許穩定幣及多幣種系統接管的時機已成熟，會存在用於交易的穩定資產、投機用途的資產，而比特幣則可能因謝林點 (Schelling point) 的出現而成為一種普及的備用資產，類似於黃金在目前以及其過往歷史上的功能。
註：謝林點指博弈論中大家在沒有溝通的情況下，因為該選項較自然、特別而有默契地做出一樣的選擇。
