韓國蔚山科學技術研究院去年大膽進行一項實驗「 Science Walden」，發明了一款可以將排泄物轉化為電力的特製馬桶，而為了鼓勵學生使用，甚至還發行了數位貨幣，讓學生們能夠靠「大便」賺零花錢、點糞成金，只可惜由於經費不足使得計劃難以為繼，這項實驗已於今年 2 月被迫終止。
蔚山科學技術研究院的都市環境工程教授趙在元（Cho Jae-weon）自 2015 年起研究沼氣發電，後來研究團隊想把這價值導入生態經濟流，因此研發出「BeeVi」馬桶，並於 2018 年開始在校內展開實驗，而實驗設施內的臥室及洗手間，也都是使用糞便產生的可再生能源。
幣圈常以「屎幣」（Shitcoin）戲稱毫無價值的數位貨幣，不過，趙在元就認為，大便是珍貴的資源，可產生能源，而這項研究是基於「糞便的價值」所創建的，因此才會將其貨幣體系命名為「糞便標準幣（feces Standard Money，fSM）」，並以韓語的「Ggool」（蜂蜜）代表每個單位的 fSM。
據介紹，使用「BeeVi」馬桶上廁所後，真空幫浦會將排泄物吸入地下化糞槽，經微生物分解後，排洩物就會釋出可燃燒發電的甲烷，也就是俗稱的沼氣。
為了吸引學生使用 BeeVi 馬桶，以及活用大便的發電，研究團隊發行數位貨幣 Ggool。學生在沖完馬桶後，只要拿起手機掃描 QR code，就能換取 10 枚 Ggool 代幣，用來在校園內買咖啡、文具、書籍、泡麵等。
經費已燒光 實驗終止
這項實驗於去年 7 月首次對外公開，轟動一時。然而，趙在元最近接受媒體採訪時表示，由於為期 5 年的資助計畫已屆滿，再加上大眾對這項研究的興趣不溫不火，而項目本身也無法自給自足，最終只能選擇放棄實驗。
趙在元表示，「不幸的是，我的項目 Science Walden 已於今年 2 月結束了，fSM 和 Beevi 也都付諸東流。 他們大概是認為，自己資助的金錢已夠多，想說 Science Walden 應該能夠獨當一面。」
